Please join Americas Quarterly (AQ) in Belem, Brazil, as we launch our new issue, "Today’s Amazon: How It's Changing and How to Protect It." The Amazon faces a potentially disastrous “tipping point” because of extensive deforestation. While the pace of tree loss has slowed 75 percent over the past decade thanks to the efforts of Brazil and other countries, the time has come to embrace an even more ambitious goal—and cut net deforestation to zero. This goal is obviously good for the environment, but it’s also good for the economy and businesses as it will lead to a smarter style of development.
Governor of Para Simão Jatene will open the event with remarks on his state’s commitment to zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2020. Beto Veríssimo, senior researcher and co-founder of the Amazon Institute of People and the Environment, will follow, presenting on the benefits zero deforestation will have on the environment and on the Amazon economy. AQ’s editor-in-chief, Brian Winter, will moderate a discussion between Jatene and Veríssimo.
The event will be conducted in Portuguese. Copies of selected articles will be available in Portuguese.
Speakers:
