Musica Ficta is one of Spain’s leading early music groups, founded in 1992 by Raúl Mallavibarrena, having released 18 albums and toured internationally. In their Music of the Americas debut, the ensemble will perform vocal and instrumental music written in Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Raúl Mallavibarrena, director

Conductor Raúl Mallavibarrena, born in Oviedo, started his musical studies in music with his father and later studied guitar with Carmen Ross in the Conservatorio Superior of Madrid. He started his career as conductor at age 17, specializing in renaissance and baroque music. He is the founder and conductor of Musica Ficta, Ensemble Fontegara, and Civitas Harmoniae. He appears regularly as a guest lecturer at universities in Spain and has been a consultant for press and radio, as well as for the Teatro Real in Madrid.

This concert is part of GEMAS, a project of Americas Society and Gotham Early Music Scene devoted to early music of the Americas with Nell Snaidas and Sebastián Zubieta as co-artistic directors.
