Overview

Join the Young Professional of the Americas (YPA) for an exclusive discussion with two top experts on Mexico ahead of the country's June 2 elections where a new president, nine governors, all of Congress, and over 20,000 local posts will elected. And it seem all but assured that the country will elect its first woman president.

Two experts—Alma Caballero of McLarty Associates and Carlos Petersen of Lazard Geopolitical Advisory—will provide insight on the elections, covering the major candidates, the top issues, and their expectations for the next sexenio. After introductory remarks, attendees will have the chance to partake in a Q&A followed by a casual drinks reception.

Alma Caballero assists clients on a range of issues of strategic planning, government relations, and transaction management in Latin America, particularly in Mexico and Central America. Prior to joining McLarty Associates, Ms. Caballero served as the Latin American policy advisor at a leading Washington, DC law-based global law firm, where she worked closely with the firm’s legal practices to provide strategic advice, risk assessment, and consulting services to international clients with investments and operations in Latin America, and Latin American clients with a global presence or interest in expanding their operations overseas. Ms. Caballero has also worked at the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, Mitsubishi Corporations (Americas), and The Brookings Institution, where she contributed to several publications, including “The End of Nostalgia: Mexico Confronts the Challenges of Global Competition.” 

Ms. Caballero earned a BS in Science, Technology and International Affairs and an MA in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service (SFS), where she serves as a member of the SFS Board of Advisors. She is currently pursuing an Executive MBA at Columbia University in New York City. Ms. Caballero serves as an advisory council member of the U.S. Mexico Foundation, senior advisor to the Georgetown Americas Institute, and vice-chairman of the Board of Directors for love.futbol. She is an Aspen Security rising leader and a David Rockefeller fellow of the Trilateral Commission. She is a dual citizen of Mexico and the US, and speaks fluent Spanish, intermediate Italian, and intermediate Portuguese.

About Carlos Petersen

Carlos Petersen

Carlos Petersen is a senior geopolitical strategist at Lazard Geopolitical Advisory (LGA), which provides market-relevant geopolitical analysis to Lazard and its clients. For close to a decade, he has been a geopolitical analyst, particularly focusing on Latin America, region that he covered for eight years at the political-risk firm Eurasia Group. Carlos advised clients of multinational companies on the macro and sector specific trends developing in the region, especially regarding Mexico’s political dynamics. Prior to joining Eurasia Group, Carlos worked at the geoeconomics analysis firm Medley Global Advisors in new York and at Integralia Consultores, a public policy consultancy based in Mexico City. He previously worked at Mexico’s energy ministry, serving as an adviser to the minister. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a bachelor’s degree from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico. Carlos coauthored Aplauso Perdido, a book about the successes and failures of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
