Andrés Manuel López Obrador has long been described as the “Teflon president,” given his ability to weather storms that ranged from the Covid-19 pandemic to slow economic growth. He’s maintained approval levels north of 60 percent and his popularity no doubt helped serve as a boost to his party, Morena, in the June 2024 elections, even if Mexican presidents cannot seek reelection. Not only did his successor Claudia Sheinbaum beat her next-closest rival by 30 points, but Morena’s coalition holds crucial majorities in both houses of Congress and a majority of state legislatures. That paves the way for the political movement he started to pass sweeping reforms that will transform Mexico’s institutions.
But despite his popularity, Mexicans give his government lower marks in areas such as security and corruption. And some of the institutions he’s sought to overhaul—such as the electoral agency and the Supreme Court—also draw high approval figures.
