    Music of the Americas Live and En Casa

    Instrument maker Mário Lemos performs, Michelle Camargo returns, and the Manhattan Chamber Players play live in New York.

    En Casa continues with Brazilian percussionist and instrument inventor Mário Lúcio Lemos, from Belo Horizonte. Clarinetist Michelle Camargo is back with a solo performance. And, live onstage, the Manhattan Chamber Players play music by Felipe Nieto, Andrea Casarrubios, and JP Jofre with the composer on an instrument called the bandoneon.

    Mário Lúcio Lemos is a Brazilian composer, performer, and instrument builder who studied social sciences at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and percussion with Roberto Veitenheimer, Bill Lucas, Paulinho Silva, and Grupo Uakti, among others. In addition to his work as session musician and teacher, he has an instrument-building studio where he creates ingenious designs for himself and others. 

    From Belo Horizonte, he sent us “A máquina de xilofone e corda,” performed on one of his hand-made instruments, programmed to play rhythmic patterns of Brazilian popular as a backdrop for a melody from a monochord. 

    En Casa: Michelle Camargo

    Wednesday, May 1, 10 am

    Colombian clarinetist Michelle Camargo returns to En Casa with a solo version of "Claribuco," a solo piece by Alejandro Sánchez, written in 2007 in honor of Argentine clarinetist and instrument maker Luis Rossi.

    Music of the Americas: Manhattan Chamber Players with JP Jofre

    Thursday, May 2, 7 pm

    The group, joined by the renowned bandoneonist, premieres a new piece by Felipe Nieto alongside music by Andrea Casarrubios and Jofre.
