Americas Quarterly to Release 2013 Social Inclusion Index

In its second year, the Index evaluates 16 countries across Latin America based on a range of issues such as poverty, education, and gender.

New York, July 16, 2013—How do countries in the Americas stack up in terms of social inclusion, ranging from civil rights to poverty levels? Americas Quarterly, the policy journal of Americas Society/Council of the Americas, will hold a pre-publication briefing of its second annual Social Inclusion Index on Wednesday, July 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This event will take place at the Council of the Americas’ Washington office, 1615 L St, NW, Suite 250.

In its second year, the Index evaluates 16 countries on access to public and private goods by race, ethnicity, and gender, attitudes toward empowerment and government responsiveness, and the protection of basic civil, political, and human rights. The 2013 Index, to be published in the forthcoming summer issue of Americas Quarterly, adds three new variables and four additional countries, as well as new data on race and gender pertaining to women’s rights, LGBT rights, and financial inclusion.

"Many factors affecting social inclusion are embedded in centuries of institutional distortion, economic exclusion and patterns of discrimination and politics. The Index is an effort to identify the different factors, promote a broad, informed public discussion of the issues, and help governments and the private sector understand and address the social, economic, racial, and legal barriers to social inclusion," says Christopher Sabatini, Editor-In-Chief, Americas Quarterly, and Senior Director of Policy, AS/COA. Dr. Sabatini will further discuss social inclusion variables and regional findings.

Jason Marczak, Director of Policy, AS/COA will speak about country rankings and their correlation to homicide rates in Central America; and Alana Tummino, Policy Manager, AS/COA will explain the new variables and their impact on the country rankings. Mauricio Vivero, Executive Director, Seattle International Foundation, will provide the introductory remarks. Judith Morrison, Senior Advisor for the Gender and Diversity Unit, Inter-American Development Bank, will be a discussant.
