Americas Society Announces Support for the Colombian Film Festival in New York City

Americas Society is pleased to announce its support of the first Colombian Film Festival in New York City.

New York, March 11, 2013 – Americas Society is pleased to announce its support of the first Colombian Film Festival in New York City presented by Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Colombian Embassy to the United States, and the Consulate General of Colombia in New York. The inaugural Colombian Film Festival will be held from March 20 to 24 at Tribeca Cinemas and will include over 16 films—including features, documentaries, and short films—some of which will be shown for the first time in the United States.

Over the past few years, the Colombian film industry has experienced a revival led by filmmakers working on variety of genres from comedy to film noir, from thrillers to police drama, documentaries to animation. Films that will be screened at the Colombian Film Festival include Apatía (Apathy) directed by Arturo Ortegón; Sofía y el terco (Sofía and the stubborn) directed by Andrés Burgos; Maybe tomorrow by director Michael Wolfe; Chocó by Johnny Hendrix; and Mamá, tómate la sopa (Mom, eat your soup), by Mario Ribero. In the short films category, one highlight is El Elefante Rojo (The Red Elephant) by Ana María Hermida, winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Film and Directing Awards at the 2009 Dusty Film and Animation Festival.
