AS/COA Commends Conclusion of Trans-Pacific Partnership Negotiations

AS/COA commends the negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which successfully concluded with the mega-regional trade agreement.

Washington, DC, October 5, 2015Americas Society and Council of the Americas welcome today’s announcement that representatives of the 12 Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) countries have successfully concluded negotiations on the mega-regional trade agreement. TPP has strong, positive implications for U.S. trade policy in Latin America and promises to provide a real boost for regional trade expansion, as advocated by the Council of the Americas' Trade Advisory Group.

Besides the United States, TPP includes four more countries from the Western Hemisphere—Canada, Mexico, Peru, and Chile—as well as seven Asian economies, representing, in total, nearly 40 percent of global GDP. This ambitious agreement offers the possibility of upgrading existing free-trade arrangements with a comprehensive approach—a potential gold standard for global trade.

AS/COA congratulates the 12 governments and looks forward to continuing to promote opportunities for trade expansion in the Western Hemisphere.
