AS/COA Hosts Presidents and Leaders on the Sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly

Nine presidents, as well as ministers and ambassadors, spoke with members about investment opportunities, economic themes, and country-specific issues.

During the week of September 23, presidents, ambassadors, and ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean visited Americas Society at 680 Park Avenue for private meetings hosted by AS/COA President and CEO Susan Segal. On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the leaders met with AS/COA members to discuss investment opportunities, economic themes, and country-specific issues.

"This has been an incredible week, said Segal. "It has been an honor to host nine presidents from Latin American and Caribbean countries at our office in New York. In a highly polarized environment, the Council of the Americas and its members continue to meet with leaders from all sides of the political spectrum to further our commitment to economic development in the Western Hemisphere."

José Raúl Mulino, Panama

Panama’s recently inaugurated president, José Raúl Mulino, joined us on September 23. He was accompanied by Minister of the Economy and Finance Felipe Chapman, Minister of Foreign Relations Javier Martínez-Acha, and Minister of Trade and Industry Julio Moltó. In a private conversation with members, the president discussed water security at the Panama Canal and his country's role as a key hub for logistics, transportation and regional investment, among other topics.

Daniel Noboa, Ecuador

The region's youngest president, Ecuador's Daniel Noboa, also visited AS/COA on September 23. The president met with Council members to highlight his country's advances in energy and agriculture sectors, as well as the continued fight against crime and gang violence.

Bernardo Arévalo, Guatemala

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo visited 680 Park Avenue for a dinner with corporate members on September 23. The president spoke about the importance of regional partnerships, highlighting U.S.- Guatemala joint efforts to address the root causes of migration.

Edmundo González and María Corina Machado

On September 24, AS/COA hosted a private meeting on the future of Venezuela. Remarks were delivered via video conference by Edmundo González, the rightful winner of the Venezuelan elections, and María Corina Machado, the leader of the opposition.

Chan Santokhi, Suriname

Suriname’s President Chan Santokhi made his second visit to AS/COA on September 24. In a lunch meeting with investors, President Santokhi highlighted opportunities in his country's emerging oil and gas industries, while emphasizing Suriname's commitment to renewable energies and sustainable development.

Gustavo Petro, Colombia

On September 24, Colombia's President Gustavo Petro made his third visit to AS/COA. Accompanied by Laura Sarabia, the head of Administrative Department of the Presidency, President Petro met with corporate members in a private event to discuss his vision for Colombia's economic development.

President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana Irfaan Ali joined us for a meeting on September 25, his third visit to AS/COA. In a private event, the president praised the work of the Council and highlighted the current investment opportunities in hi country.

Santiago Peña, Paraguay

Santiago Peña, president of Paraguay, spoke at AS/COA on September 25. He discussed the investment opportunities that Paraguay offers in various key sectors, including sustainable industries.

Nayib Bukele, El Salvador

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele arrived at AS/COA on September 25 to participate in a private meeting. He shared, in an open dialogue with corporate members, key ideas for the economic development of his country, inviting greater foreign investments. He was joined by Salvadoran Ambassador to the United States Milena Mayorga.

On September 25, AS/COA held a dinner with three Peruvian ministers: Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, Economy Minister José Arista, and Justice Minister Eduardo Arana. They spoke with corporate members about opportunities for investment in their country.
