AS/COA's Alana Tummino spoke to BBC's Newshour about the opening of commercial flights between the United States and Cuba.
U.S.-Cuban officials will sign a deal in Havana today to reinstate commercial flights between the two countries for the first time in half a decade. AS/COA’s Alana Tummino spoke to BBC’s Newshour on the significance of this step in normalizing relations. “Right now...there are limited charter flights at very high prices so this is in expectation of significantly opening up this sector and getting us closer to normalized relations,” she said. Regarding business opportunities for both countries, Alana added that “Business people are flocking to the island and seeing if this is a market for them… There are some areas that are easier to invest in than others like Telecom, for example. But even companies who can’t invest under the current framework really want to preposition themselves now for that investment once the full trade embargo is lifted.”
