Walking through this small yet rich show, one can tell it was curated with great care. It focuses on the work and life of José Leonilson, an artist from the northeast of Brazil who is especially known for his stunning embroidery work. The exhibition begins with the very end of his output — when he was tragically diagnosed with AIDS in his early 30s — and goes backward in time. His pieces, which range from an embroidered orange pocket to a rectangle of cloth studded with beads, often incorporate intimate, confessional language, as though Leonilson were speaking directly to you....
