Carin Zissis on KJZZ: What the United States Can Learn from Reforms in Mexico's Electoral System

By Rodrigo Cervantes

"There would be an appreciation for the kind of popular vote system like you have in Mexico," said the AS/COA Online editor-in-chief.

Carin Zissis, editor-in-chief of AS/COA Online, spoke to Rodrigo Cervantes on KJZZ about electoral systems in the United States and Mexico.

“One thing about the Electoral College in the United States is that it’s not very popular, and yet it seems that we’re stuck with it,” Zissis said. “In the United States there would be an appreciation for the kind of popular vote system like you have in Mexico."

Zissis said that some of the INE's regulations, including controlling air time and campaign propaganda, still allow for extensive media campaigns. She called the amount of political advertising in Mexico, "shocking."

Zissis expressed surprise at recent U.S. campaign season reminders of previous Mexican electoral practices, citing President Trump signing stimulus checks.

“These are things that we have seen, in elections in Mexico that people are always calling out here as a way to influence vote outcomes,” Zissis said.
