CNN Interviews Eric Farnsworth about U.S. Relations with Argentina and El Salvador

By Rahel Solomon

The AS/COA vice president spoke about how Presidents Nayib Bukele and Javier Milei have managed with Trump's migration and tariff policies.

Eric Farnsworth, vice president at AS/COA, was interviewed by Rahel Solomon on CNN's Early Start program about the evolving dynamics between the United States and Latin American countries, especially the relations between Washington and El Salvador and Argentina.

Solomon started the interview by asking Farnsworth his thoughts on the decision of Trump and President Nayib Bukele to not return to the United States a Salvadoran man that was mistakenly deported to El Salvador on allegations of being a gang member.

"This unfortunate incident that's occurred between the United States and El Salvador is one that both presidents are aligned on," said Farnsworth. This is a "political decision" given that El Salvador has much to gain from building a strong relationship with the United States, according to the expert.

Farnsworth explained that Argentina's President Javier Milei seems to be in good terms with Trump. The recent tariff announcement could somehow benefit Argentina, a country that currently does not have a free trade agreement with the United States, said Farnsworth.

"The tariffs issue could be a driver toward a closer economic relationship between Argentina and the United States. And so that's one of the countries in Latin America, perhaps, that could benefit from this," said the expert.

Finally, Farnsworth pointed out that it is uncertain if other leaders could replicate the way Bukele and Milei have navigated relations with Trump. He argued that both leaders cultivated a relationship even before Trump was elected. "But at the end of the day, they're the leaders of their own sovereign countries and they're trying to promote their own interests," said the vice president.
