If the United States does not pay more attention to the region, "needs will be fulfilled by China," said the AS/COA vice president to the radio network.
Simeon Tegel of NPR interviewed AS/COA's Vice President Eric Farnsworth regarding last week's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Peru, Donald Trump's tariffs threats, and China becoming Peru's largest trading partner.
Tegel highlighted how U.S. President Joe Biden's presence at APEC was overshadowed by Donald Trump's victory and his threats to impose tariffs on Chinese exports. The journalist also mentioned that Peru relies on exporting raw materials, especially to China.
"There are knock-on effects here. Even if the target isn't specifically Peru, which enjoys a free trade agreement with the United States, you're still going to see some indirect impact on exporters like Peru, a country that really does depend on international trade environment," said Farnsworth.
Regarding what the United States should do in order to maintain the economic relationships with Latin America, Farnsworth said: "The APEC economies really do desire a greater relationship with the United States. But we have to up our game in order to encourage them to make those deals and to have that relationship with us. Otherwise, the needs will be fulfilled by China."
