Eric Farnsworth on VOA: Helping Latin America Should Be Washington's "Top Priority"
“One would hope that as vaccinations are reaching certain thresholds…we do find a way somehow to be very generous,” said the AS/COA vice president.
Eric Farnsworth, a Council of the Americas vice president, spoke to Carol Castiel on Voice of America's Encounter podcast about how COVID-19 has affected the health systems and economies of Latin America.
"The situation is pretty desperate," Farnsworth said. "The disease seems to have done more damage to the Western Hemisphere than to other regions in the world." Farnsworth cited leadership, regional economies, lack of connectivity, and misinformation as some of the reasons why the region has been heavily affected by the pandemic.
When asked how the Biden administration could help the region, Farnsworth said, "This has to be a top priority," adding, "One would hope that as vaccinations are reaching certain thresholds…we do find a way somehow to be very generous in the context of getting vaccines into Latin America and the Caribbean."
