Former Honduran President Hernández Barred From Entry Into U.S.
"The Biden administration has made anticorruption efforts its top priority in Central America," said AS/COA's Eric Farnsworth to The Wall Street Journal.
The U.S. government barred former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández from entering the country, and made the decision public as it seeks to improve ties with the Central American country as part of efforts to curb migration to the U.S.
The State Department said Monday it included Mr. Hernández on its Corrupt and Undemocratic Actors list in July, citing alleged acts of corruption and illicit campaign financing…
“It’s not unexpected that the U.S. would act against Juan Orlando Hernández. This has been an open speculation for months, the question was what form would it take,” said Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Council of the Americas and head of the think tank’s Washington, D.C., office…
The fact that Mr. Hernández has now left office, and the efforts to reset bilateral relations under his successor, likely explain why the U.S. government is now revealing an action taken previously, Mr. Farnsworth said.
“The timing matters, the symbolism matters. The Biden administration has made anticorruption efforts its top priority in Central America,” he said “This is clearly an effort to show progress in that fight.”…
