Latin America, Alone in a Distracted World

The region has more autonomy than any point in recent memory. That brings opportunities and challenges.

Today’s Latin America is seeing a confluence of two trends. The first is that, with global powers increasingly focused on their own problems and rivalries, Latin American countries enjoy an autonomy to make their own decisions unlike any other moment in recent memory. In this atmosphere of reduced foreign influence (or “meddling,” depending on your point of view), governments in the region have more room for maneuver. This can only be a good thing.
