Latin America: Not as Polarized as You Think

Deep ideological divisions among voters have been the norm across the region for decades, not the exception.

If you mainly see the world through the media (or Twitter), today’s Latin America looks more polarized than ever. Recent runoff elections in Peru and Chile were dominated by accusations of communism or fascism. Meanwhile the leaders in Mexico and El Salvador are routinely denouncing their opponents as corrupt and being characterized as authoritarians in the making. But in truth, if one takes the long view, policy differences are not as dramatic as when the region was discussing privatization or expropriation in the 1990s and early 2000s.
