Music of the Americas: Los Lagos

This week, we feature musicians from southern Chile and a video of the Pablo Chin Portrait concert in June 2024.

This week, En Casa visits the south of Chile with a group of musicians selected by Dani Conejero, who was on the series last season.

She introduced us to a group of wonderful musicians who live and work in the beautiful region of lakes, mountains, and sea. Last week, we released a video by Medicentuna, who is back with another song she recorded in Frutillar, alongside Seba Barrientos from Puerto Varas, and Caro Guttmann from Chiloé.

We close the week with the release of the video of the portrait concert of Costa Rican composer Pablo Chin. The music is performed by string trio Chartreuse with Chin's Fonema Consort, and was recorded at Americas Society in June 2024.

Thank you for watching, and you can support future En Casa performances with a gift to Music at Americas Society today!

Tuesday, October 1, 10 am

Seba Barrientos is a composer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Puerto Varas in southern Chile. For more than 15 years, he has been dedicated to teaching music and writing songs inspired by the nature that surrounds him and the human experience. He released his debut album, La simpleza, in 2022. He is currently performing as a soloist and also with a band.

Accompanied by Cristián García, he sent us this version of "Lo mágico," a song off of La simpleza with an atmospheric and captivating sound inspired by the forests and humidity of southern Chile.

En Casa: Caro Guttmann

Wednesday, October 2, 10 am

Caro Guttmann is a Chilean singer-songwriter, artist, and therapist based in the Chiloé archipelago, the northernmost of the Patagonian islands. Her art is nourished by nature, magic, poetry, and a sharp look at gender, focusing her commitment on the reality of Latin American women and ancestry. She has released several albums, and is the director of Domo, Mujeres al Sur, a festival for female musicians in the region. She has toured several countries with her music and the sensitive message of her art.

Alongside Natalia Carrillo and Jazmín Vera, she sent us this version of "Para bien," a song from her 2017 album Amor a Cielo Abierto. Caro invites us to consider self-care and self-confidence, and to love and take care of ourselves in difficult moments.
