OperaWire: Music of the Americas to Present 'Coro Acardenchado'

Music of the Americas is set to present “Coro Acardenchado” on Nov. 23, 2024 at Chelsea Factory in New York City.
The showcase is a choral music project founded by Juan Pablo Villa in 2016 with the aim of preserving and disseminating the “canto cardenche” style through community singing. The musical style features singers performing without instrumental accompaniment and “the style takes its name from the thorns of a cactus plant, whose removal is painful but necessary.”
“The audience will get to know ‘canto cardenche,’ one of Mexico’s most remarkable traditional music genres through a contemporary lens,” music director Sebastián Zubieta said in an official press statement. “The Coro’s concerts are a unique musical experience based on the truthful adaptation and creative re-imagining of traditional songs and a staging that includes choreography and extended vocal techniques.”
The showcase will be directed by Villa in collaboration with María Emilia Martínez and Leika Mochán. The ensemble has performed at the Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato and the Centro Cultural de España in Mexico City.
