Music of the Americas: Sound Art and Traditional Songs

Electronic music and improvisation from Argentina share the week with traditional music from the Chilean Patagonia.

Americas Society is your home for exploring the culture and current affairs of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. Become a member today and receive exclusive benefits, while also joining us in our mission to increase awareness of the Americas and the ties that bind our nations together.

This week, En Casa combines avant-garde music by Jorge Haro and Peripheria Duo from Argentina with more traditional music from the island of Chiloé in Chile's Patagonia region by Maruja Navarro and Cecilia Bahamonde.

En Casa: Jorge Haro

Tuesday, February 25, 10 am

Jorge Haro is an Argentine sound and visual composer based in Buenos Aires and Madrid. He works in the field of computer music, sound art, and audiovisual pieces, and composes based on field recordings and the use of digital media.

He sent us two audiovisual pieces. Today we share a screen-recorded version of "Visual Music."

En Casa: Maruja Navarro

Wednesday, February 26, 10 am

Maruja Navarro is back with "La Pericona," a group dance that has several different melodies, all following the same structure. This version was passed down by the singer's grandfather.

En Casa: Peripheria Duo

Thursday, February 27, 10 am

Peripheria Duo, formed in 2024 in Argentina by Patricia García and Juan Pedro Torresani, is dedicated to free improvisation on the flute and cello.

From Buenos Aires, they sent us two improvisations inspired by nature. Today we share "Peri."

En Casa: Cecilia Bahamonde

Friday, February 28, 10 am

Cecilia Bahamonde is back with this version of the traditional "Una noche sentada en la playa," an old waltz whose melody reminds the singer of the waves of the sea.
