The State of Latin American Entrepreneurship, in the New Issue of Americas Quarterly

At a time of heightened global uncertainty, fostering entrepreneurship is the best way to jump-start the region's economies.

A 35-page special report in the magazine’s first issue of 2017 argues that enabling young entrepreneurs is the best way to jump-start the region’s economies. Co-hosted with Endeavor Miami and the IDEA Center at Miami Dade College, a February 16 launch event will celebrate Latin America’s entrepreneurial superstars.

New York, January 19, 2016—From street market vendors to software engineers to small-scale subsistence farmers, Latin America crackles with the ingenuity and raw ambition that drive any successful startup. For its first issue of 2017 Americas Quarterly (AQ)—the leading publication on politics, business, and culture in the hemisphere—states that creating and nurturing young entrepreneurs is “The Solution” for countries trying to get their economies moving again, especially at a time of heightened global uncertainty.

This AQ issue highlights the careers and achievements of the region’s five top entrepreneurs and how they overcame adversity to become leaders in the fields of entertainment, technology, and consumer products. Also in this issue, leading women entrepreneurs and investors share the lessons that helped them thrive, and industry experts weigh in on how innovators can get their ideas noticed, stressing that Latin American entrepreneurs no longer need to look to Silicon Valey for role models as the region has plenty of startups to boast about.

“Government policies, outdated education systems, and other barriers such as gender discrimination, security, and poor quality of life in large cities prevent people from realizing their full potential,” writes AQ Editor-in-Chief Brian Winter. “This issue both celebrates what young entrepreneurs have already achieved and looks at ways to help them reach their full potential.”

The latest AQ issue also includes:

  • A profile of María Eugenia Vidal, the wildly popular governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and one of the most unique figures in Latin American politics today.

LAUNCH EVENT:
In partnership with Endeavor Miami and the IDEA Center at Miami Dade College, the launch event of AQ's upcoming issue on young entrepreneurs will take place on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the IDEA Center. The two-hour event will feature successful business stories from Latin America to emphasize the importance of entrepreneurship, examine challenges of starting a business, and discuss how governments and businesses can encourage further growth.
