Economy and Finance Minister Alonso Segura spoke about Peru's position in the global and regional economy.

Economy Minister Alonso Segura shared a presentation about Peru's economic scenario and outlook in a regional and global context.

Looking at Latin America as a whole, he addressed the sluggish regional growth of 1.3 percent and compared it to the 2008/2009 global economic downturn, when the slowdown was faster, but so was the rebound. With that in mind, Segura said Peru hopes to return to meet its potential for GDP growth of 5 percent. He outlined the government's goals for growth, including through investments in areas such as human capital and major infrastructure projects. The minister also emphasized the need for reforms, noting that the countries in the Pacific Alliance, of which Peru is a member, are the biggest reformers in Latin America. "We want investment, we want jobs, and we want people to consume," he said.

Segura also looked at the impact of climate change on Peru's economy, saying that confronting the issue is at the center of their development plans. He noted that the budget includes projects to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly in high-risk zones of the country, and that the government hopes to carry out a zero-deforestation policy.
