Minister of Development and Social Inclusion Carolina Trivelli defined the country's development objectives and announced the creation of a special Economic Inclusion Fund to help achieve these goals.

Speaking at a development conference held at Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Relations to celebrate the United Nations’ sixty-seventh birthday, Minister of Development and Social Inclusion Carolina Trivelli outlined how the Andean country was advancing on its Millennium Challenge Goals. Her ministry, known by its Spanish acronym MIDIS, had identified the sector of Peruvian society most needing of state resources—a total of 5 million Peruvians, or 16 percent of the population.

“These 5 million Peruvians face much lower indicators than the national average across all of the Millennium development’s goals,” said Trivelli. “Our challenge is to not only meet the Millennium objectives, but also make sure that this vulnerable and very excluded group in particular is able to get closer to reaching these goals.

The minister also announced the launch of the Economic Inclusion Fund for Rural Areas, which, according to a Ministry statement, will “allow us to complete and ensure access to public services in order to lay the foundation for achieving sustainable development and opportunities so that extremely poor communities may achieve success.” The Fund will actively engage regional governments on development and economic-assistance projects.

At an October 24 conference that brought together officials from Peru’s urban and rural municipal governments, Trivelli announced plans for a pilot program across 20 of Peru’s provinces to better identify how to help people facing poverty and inequality. She added that it was important that national government officials get involved in discussions and interact with local governments so as to build a frank agenda of collaboration.
