Comprehensive Immigration Reform: An Update
AS/COA held a panel discussion on the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.
Overview
Last month, the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” senators introduced the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, outlining a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., establishing new border security and enforcement measures, and reforming the visa system to reflect labor market demands. As the Senate Judiciary Committee begins markup of the bill, the Gang of Eight in the House of Representatives continues to work on its own bipartisan legislation as piecemeal bills in the House are also introduced. What are the latest developments, and what could be expected from each Chamber in the short to medium term? What is the timeline moving forward? How will discussions be affected by those outside Washington, including in New York City? AS/COA discussed these questions and more.
Speakers:
- Juan Manuel Benítez, Host & Executive Producer, Pura Política, NY1
- Muzaffar Chishti, Director, Migration Policy Institute Office at NYU Law
- Jason Marczak, Director of Policy, Americas Society/Council of the Americas (Moderator)
