Award-winning Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vásquez will speak at Americas Society about his new work.
Overview
Celebrated Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vásquez and U.S. writer Jess Row will discuss Vásquez's acclaimed novel The Sound of Things Falling as well as his latest, Reputaciones, and other works of fiction. Vásquez received the 2012 English PEN Award and the 2011 Alfaguara Prize. Named one of Granta's "Best Young American Novelists" in 2007, Row is a promising young author whose short-story collection The Train to Lo Wu was shortlisted for a PEN/Hemingway Award in 2006. This program will be conducted in English. A book-signing will follow the program, in collaboration with Posman Books.

This evening is part of the core Literature programming for Spring 2014, which focuses on the theme of "Beyond Violence: Toward Justice in New Latin American Writing." A special issue of Review developed in conjunction with this program season, which features a "sneak peak" of Vásquez's latest novel in translation, Reputations, and a review of The Sound of Things Falling, will be launched on May 15 at the Americas Society.

Juan Gabriel Vásquez (Bogotá, 1973) is a novelist, short-story writer, essayist, translator, and weekly columnist for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador. He is the author of Los informantes (2004; The Informers, 2009), Historia secreta de Costaguana (2007; The Secret History of Costaguana, 2011) El ruido de las cosas al caer (2011; The Sound of Things Falling, 2013), and Las reputaciones (2013).
Jess Row (Washington, D.C., 1974) is a short story writer, novelist, professor, and Buddhist chaplain at The College of New Jersey. His books include The Train to Lo Wu (2005), Nobody Ever Gets Lost (2011), and the forthcoming Your Face in Mine (Summer 2014).
