As part of ICI’s Curator's Perspective—an itinerant public discussion series featuring national and international curators—Emiliano Valdés, chief curator of the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM), will present a talk titled "A New Program for a Renewed Institution".

With the completion of its new building and amid a growing and professionalizing arts scene, the MAMM expanded not only its physical capacity, but more importantly, its institutional project, vision, and scope. New exhibition spaces, and for the first time galleries dedicated to the permanent collection, as well as a theater, a sound gallery, and more public and commercial areas, among other facilities, have prompted MAMM to rethink its role in the country's modern and contemporary art research, exhibition, and publication platforms. The opening of the Expansión building in 2015 was not the end of a museum-expansion program, but the point of departure for a rethinking of the museum's role in the development of changing the city’s arts and culture, and its articulation with a wide network of institutions: from independent arts spaces to long-established museums.

For this Curator's Perspective, Emilano Valdés will address the goals for the renewed institution and its various programs, as well as a wider vision of how museums play a role in the transformation of societies, particularly in the context of Latin America and its complex social, political, and financial circumstances.
