Guatemala's Progress and Challenges 20 Years after the Peace Accords
Council of the Americas will hold a public, on-the-record commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the peace accords that brought Guatemala’s civil war to a close. Key players from the negotiations—former Guatemalan President Álvaro Arzú, former U.S. Special Envoy for the Americas Thomas “Mack” McLarty, and former U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala Donald Planty—will deliver remarks.
Overview
Council of the Americas will hold a public, on-the-record commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the peace accords that brought Guatemala’s civil war to a close. Key players from the negotiations will reflect on the historic agreement and additional high-level experts will comment on Guatemala’s trajectory over the past two decades.
As the surprising result of Colombia’s referendum indicated, peace is neither guaranteed nor easy. This discussion will take stock of lessons learned from Guatemala's peace deliberations, consider their implications for other scenarios in Latin America, and analyze both Guatemala’s progress and its current business climate. Following President Jimmy Morales’s recent joint meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and the leaders of neighboring nations El Salvador and Honduras, the Plan of the Alliance for Prosperity provides a framework for the development agenda in Guatemala and the wider Northern Triangle as well as a basis for conversation on prospects for the country’s future growth.
Speakers:
- Álvaro Arzú, Former President of Guatemala and Current Mayor of Guatemala City
- Thomas “Mack” McLarty, Former U.S. Special Envoy for the Americas and Current Chairman of McLarty Associates
- Gladys Marithza Ruiz de Vielman, Ambassador of Guatemala to the U.S.
- Donald Planty, Former U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala and Current President of Planty and Associates
- Humberto López, Country Director for Central America, The World Bank
- Fernando Quevedo, Representative in Guatemala, Inter-American Development Bank
