Japan, U.S., and Latin America Cooperation for the Free and Open International Order
Council of the Americas hosts an expert panel to discuss how governments like the United States and Japan can help promote economic growth and democratic governance in the Western Hemisphere.
Overview
Popular dissatisfaction with lackluster economic growth, tepid recovery, growing inequality, and uncertain future prospects is weighing on democracies across the Americas. The need to establish a credible path for economic recovery and growth is urgent. Meanwhile, China has stepped into the space, seeking to leverage financial and economic engagement for strategic gain, even at the expense of fundamental values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
To support democracy and a free and open international order, governments—including the United States, Japan, and others—must seek to develop mechanisms for economic cooperation that will strengthen democracy across the region. These conversations are particularly relevant in the run up to the June Summit of the Americas, to be held in Los Angeles, where leaders will have an opportunity to highlight and promote an active, engaged, and meaningful trade and economic agenda for the Americas as a key pillar supporting regional democratic governance.
Please join us as we discuss these critical issues in depth with leading experts and practitioners to consider what is possible, and what is likely, given the critical importance of increasing trade and growing investment to economic well-being and healthy democratic societies.
