“Garota de Itaparica” (“The Girl from Itaparica”, 2019)
Composed at the Instituto Sacatar in Itaparica, Brazil and dedicated to Gordon Beeferman
WORLD PREMIERE
"Last summer I spent two months at the idyllic Instituto Sacatar on the island of Itaparica in Bahia, Brazil," writes Stephanie Griffin. "While I was there, I took some lessons with a local Candomblédrummer named Luis. I was completely baffled by a rhythm he taught me, which turned out to be two rhythms! As I tried to reconcile these two rhythms on the keyboard in my studio, “Garota de Itaparica” (The Girl from Itaparica) emerged. As the piece developed, I realized I was also influenced by the music of my favorite composer and pianist Gordon Beeferman, so I dedicated it to him. "
