Overview
Music of the Americas continues its online video series En Casa (At Home), featuring original daily performances with musicians from around the Americas, and Recuerdos (Memories), weekly releases of memorable past performances at the Americas Society, some for the first time.
This week we share the first group of compositions created during the online music project Jeporeka, generated by our friend Berta Rojas, in support of Paraguayan music. The virtual musical meetings took place from May to July, and offered ten young Paraguayan musicians the opportunity to work on their compositions and arrangements with Popi Spatocco, Carlos “Negro” Aguirre, and Pinchi Cardozo Ocampo. The fellows attended six days of seminars, presentations, and individual classes. The result of this project was the creation of “Pytû mimbi” (Light in the Darkness), a collection of ten brief pieces that were professionally recorded in Asunción. Each composer described their work in prose.
Follow Music of the Americas on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to watch and receive notifications of all the performances. We also publish weekly calendars here on our website, including all the videos, so you can return to this page to catch up on any performances you might have missed.

En Casa: José Cabrera
"Kunu'ũ renda"
Cabrera writes,
Because I carry your rivers in my blood and your red earth accompanies my walk.
Today fate finds me returning to you, to your landscapes and your reseda fragrances.
Jeporeka: “Kunu'ũ renda” - José Cabrera

En Casa: Esteban Godoy
"Claroscuro"
Godoy writes,
Doubt found us walking. I don’t know if it's an obstacle or a warning,
It generated uncertainty for not knowing what to do.
Maybe it is time to be a spectator for a moment, and the best thing is to take courage to think.
Jeporeka: “Claroscuro” - Esteban Godoy
Wednesday, October 7, 10 a.m.
En Casa: Javier Acosta
"Retorno"
Acosta writes,
Back to the essence of what makes us human, to love, to family.
In my work I want to capture the transition from the disconnected and cold towards the harmonious and pleasant.
The final polka represents an arrival to our identity.
Jeporeka: “Retorno” - Javier Acosta
Thursday, October 8, 10 a.m.
En Casa: Fátima Abramo and Asunción Cantero
"Admonición"
The composers write,
Fear for love, uncertainty for love,
love for those who are vulnerable,
love for those who sheltered us in their arms,
whom we now shelter in ours.
Fear, that feeling of anguish, fades when we fight together.
Jeporeka: “Admonición” - Fátima Abramo and Asunción Cantero

Recuerdos: Berta Rojas
Facebook
Rojas’ latest Music of the Americas concert was on our virtual stage this past July, to open our collaboration with the New York Guitar Seminar. Here is one of the pieces included in that concert, "Danza," by Costa Rican composer Edín Solís.
Recuerdos: Berta Rojas – “Danza” (Solís)

En Casa: Juan Pablo González
"Andar"
González writes,
The human being as a result of various accents, rhythms, and cultural sounds, is not alien to the Paraguayan being.
This work invites us to WALK together on a path that unites borders, to look around us and perhaps for the first time to reach out.
Jeporeka: “Andar” - Juan Pablo González
