Opera Hispánica returns to Music of the Americas at the Americas Society for an intimate concert of Spanish zarzuela with Latin American opera star Eglise Gutiérrez. Described by The New York Times as "riveting and beguiling," the Cuban soprano makes her Opera Hispánica debut after appearing with The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, Teatro Liceu, and Caramoor Festival. Ms. Gutiérrez is joined by tenor Diego Silva (Santa Fe Opera, Chautauqua Opera, El Paso Symphony Orchestra) and Jorge Parodi on piano performing Spanish and Latin American favorites by Moreno Torroba, Vives, Lecuona, among others.

About Opera Hispánica

Opera Hispánica (OH) is the nation's first and only Latino opera company operating under its three core properties: Opera Hispánica Festival, OH on Tour, and OHLA (Opera Hispánica Leadership Academy). Founded in 2009 by producer Daniel Frost Hernández, OH's mission is to present operas and vocal works that are in Spanish, written by a Latino or Hispanic composers and/or are inspired the the Latino perspective, ranging from the traditional Spanish zarzuela to modern day tango-operas. OH has performed to sold-out audiences throughout New York City at leading venues such as The Heckscher Theater at El Museo del Barrio, Americas Society, and Barnard College. In September 2012, OH performed for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. honoring George Lopez, where guests included Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

Opera Hispánica Festival is held annually in March in New York City. Kicked off by an opening concert and reception, it is the nation's premier Latino-inspired opera festival, including concerts, fully-staged opera productions, panel discussions, and master classes throughout the month.

OH on Tour is the company’s touring property, which allows OH the opportunity to take its productions on the road across the United States. As the national "go-to" organization for Hispanic opera, OH provides unique multi-cultural programming, consisting of "ready-made" concerts and fully-staged productions for presenters, performing arts centers, universities, and opera companies.

OHLA (Opera Hispánica Leadership Academy) offers programs such as master classes, panel discussions, community engagement initiatives, and mentorship and college preparation services to underserved New York City-based schools. OH firmly believes that the development of the company’s audiences begins with education and community engagement. The future of arts audiences and patrons is dependent upon arts organizations working with academic institutions to expose students to the arts from an early age. The Academy was created to bring opera and fine arts to underserved Latino communities and schools throughout the greater New York City area, by using music as a tool to empower minority students.
