Artist Carlito Carvalhosa and Luis Pérez-Oramas discuss I Want to be Like You, currently on view at Galeria Nara Roesler. The exhibition features a selection of works by Carlito Carvalhosa produced in the 1990s and after 2015.

About the artist:
Carlito Carvalhosa (born 1961, São Paulo, Brazil) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro and is one of Brazil’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Carvalhosa uses diverse mediums and found objects in sculpture and installations, including electric lights, fabric, wax, and mirrors, to explore architectural space and the nature of materials. The artist began his career creating abstract paintings that blended painterly gestures with an emphasis on materiality. He  continued to explore his fascination with materials through sculpture, applying the Egyptian lost-wax method and working with porcelain. His more recent works involve architectural interventions and interactive installations. His best-known piece, Sum of Days (2011), is a monumental site-specific installation for MoMA’s atrium. It is a white, translucent material in the shape of an elliptical labyrinth that hangs from the ceiling with a system of microphones that record the day’s ambient noise. This is played back the following day, allowing audiences an experience of total immersion.
