Puerto Rico: una literatura en diálogo con el mundo

As part of the fourth annual Festival de la Palabra en Nueva York, Americas Society will host five acclaimed writers from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela for a discussion on the state of literature in the region.

In the concluding event of this year's Festival de la Palabra en Nueva York, five writers from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela—Frank Báez, Janette Becerra, Eduardo Lalo (recipient of the 2013 Rómulo Gallegos Prize), Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez, Wilda Rodríguez (moderator), and Mayra Santos-Febres—will participate in a discussion on the state of literature in the region. The Festival, presented annually in San Juan and New York, and now in its fourth year, features writers from throughout the continent in discussions, readings, and book presentations. This year’s theme is “Periodismo y Literatura.” This program will be held in Spanish. A book signing will follow in collaboration with La Casa Azul Bookstore.

Frank Báez, born in 1978 in Santo Domingo, is considered the Dominican Republic’s most important young poet and short-story writer.  His collection of stories, Págales tú a los psicoanalistas  (2007) won First Prize in the Short-Story category at the 2006 Santo Domingo Book Fair.  His first book of poetry, Jarrón y otros poemas, was published in Madrid in 2004.  His latest collection, Postales, won the National Poetry Prize Salomé Ureña in 2009. Selections from his verse have also appeared in Cuerpo plural: Antología de la poesía hispanoamericana contemporánea (2010).  As editor of the online poetry review Ping Pong, Báez has published scores of poets from Latin America, North America, and Europe.  He is also a distinguished translator of English and American verse.

Janette Becerra (Puerto Rico) is a professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. Her work is included in the anthology Literatura puertorriqueña del siglo XX (2004), Perversiones desde el paraíso (2005), Los rostros de la hidra (2008), Poesía de Puerto Rico: cinco décadas (2009), Nuestra América (2010), Ejército de rosas (2011) and En el ojo del huracán (2011).

Eduardo Lalo (Puerto Rico) is an author whose books include La isla silente (2002)Los pies de San Juan (2002); La inutilidad (2004), Donde (2005); Los países invisibles (2008); and El deseo del lápiz (2010). In 2013, his novel Simone was awarded the Rómulo Gallegos International Prize.
 
Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez (Venezuela) is the author of several novels and collections of short stories. As a novelist, special mention should be made of his Una tarde con campanas (2004), and Tal vez la lluvia (1999), the latter awarded the 2009 Premio Internacional Ciudad de Barbastro 2009. Among his short-fiction collections are Míster Salinger (2007) and Ideogramas (2012). His works have been translated into several languages.
 
Wilda Rodríguez (Puerto Rico) is a journalist, political analyst, activist and publicist. She is a former columnist for El Diario-La Prensa, New York City’s leading Hispanic periodical, El Nuevo Día, Puerto Rico's main newspaper, and former president of the Association of Puerto Rican Journalists. She lives in Puerto Rico.
 
Mayra Santos-Febres (Puerto Rico) is a novelist, poet, professor (University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras), and founder/executive director of the Festival de la Palabra. Her first novel, Sirena Selena vestida de pena (2000), was a finalist for the 2001 Rómulo Gallegos Prize; it won the PEN Club of Puerto Rico’s prize for best novel, and has been translated into English and Italian. Her second novel, Cualquier miércoles soy tuya (2002), is available in English through Penguin Books. Her Nuestra Señora de la noche (2008; Our Lady of the Night, 2009) was a finalist for the Premio Primavera Literary Award, and captured Puerto Rico’s 2007 Premio Nacional de Literatura.
