Renato Borghetti Quartet

The Renato Borghetti Quartet makes their Music of the Americas debut in a vibrant program featuring a contemporary and explosive mix of gaúcho musical styles including tango, polka, chamamé, milonga, with flamenco and a dash of Brazilian pop and jazz. The quartet recorded a program live in Porto Alegre’s historic Theatro São Pedro, founded in 1858.

About the artists:

Founded by Renato Borghetti, the Renato Borghetti Quartet has been working together for over 20 years. Milongas, vaneiras, xote, and chamamés executed in an unconventional and almost classical and jazzy form. Most notable is their new project “Gaita na Fábrica” (Accordion in the Factory), an inspiring place where children and young adults can develop their love for music and learn how to play and build the gaita ponto or 8-bass diatonic accordion, the instrument that represents the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Borghetti hails from southern Brazil, close to the border with Argentina and Uruguay. When he was 10, he started playing the gaita ponto, and his first album in 1984. From the ’90s on, Borghetti increasingly toured throughout Europe and released three CDs, which were nominated for the German Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik and a Latin Grammy. He also shared the stage with artists such as Stéphane Grappelli, Ron Carter, and Hermeto Pascoal. He won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Brazilian Roots/Regional Album, for his album Gaita Ponto Com.
