YPA Webex with Patrick McGinnis: FOMO and FOBO in the Era of COVID-19
On March 25, Patrick McGinnis spoke about how the "fear of missing out" and "fear of a better option" can take place during the pandemic.
Overview
Young Professionals of the Americas hosted its first virtual event with our very own Steering Committee member and the person who coined the term FOMO, Patrick McGinnis. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and Fear of Better Options (FOBO) are always relevant, but perhaps even more so as we navigate the global crisis sparked by COVID-19. Patrick discussed his new book "Fear of Missing Out: Practical-Decision-Making in a World of Overwhelming Choice”, coming out in May 2020. We discussed how to overcome indecision in an age of paralyzing choice, whether that’s making major career decisions or choosing what to watch on Netflix, and how FOMO and FOBO are impacting lives in response to the coronavirus.
In addition to inventing concepts like FOMO and FOBO, Patrick is a venture capitalist. He gave a 2019 TED Talk on decision-making, and hosts the podcast FOMO Sapiens, distributed by Harvard Business Review, about how leaders make tough decisions. His work has been highlighted in media outlets including: The New York Times, Politico, The Financial Times, The Guardian, and Inc.
