Admiral Alvin Halsey

Commander, U.S. Southern Command

Admiral Alvin Holsey, a native of Fort Valley, Georgia, was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program at Morehouse College in 1988, where he earned a degree in Computer Science. He also holds a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University. Holsey served in various sea assignments, including deployments with USS Jesse L. Brown, USS Nicholson, USS Vreeland, USS Vella Gulf, USS Gettysburg, and USS Simpson. He commanded Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light Three Seven (HSL-37) and USS Makin Island, the Navy's first hybrid electric propulsion warship. As a flag officer, he served as commander of Carrier Strike Group One and the inaugural commander of the International Maritime Security Construct, enhancing maritime security in the Middle East. On 7 November 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Admiral and assumed command of United States Southern Command.

Holsey’s staff assignments include roles with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and the Chief of Naval Operations. He was also selected to lead Task Force One Navy, addressing societal and military readiness issues. From 2021 to 2022, he served as Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel and Commander, Navy Personnel Command, before becoming Military Deputy Commander of United States Southern Command. Promoted to Admiral on 7 November 2024, he assumed command of U.S. Southern Command. His decorations include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (five awards), and other commendations.
