Transdisciplinary Artist

Laura Anderson Barbata, born in Mexico City, is a Mexican transdisciplinary artist currently based between New York and Mexico City. Since 1992, she has initiated long-term projects and collaborations in diverse communities, including the Venezuelan Amazon, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Norway, and the United States, with a focus on social justice and environmental issues. Her work is represented in various public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary. She has received several recognitions, including the Anonymous Was a Woman Award, grants from FONCA-INBA Mexico, the Mario Trujillo García Defense for Human Rights Award, and a Rockefeller Bellagio Artist Residency.

Anderson Barbata has served as Miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores (FONCA, Mexico, 1999-2017), professor at La Esmeralda Escuela Nacional de Escultura, Pintura y Grabado (2010-2015), and currently teaches at MIT’s Art, Culture, and Technology program. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
