The head of U.S. Southern Command talked with AS/COA's Susan Segal about the role of the U.S. military in the region.
Speakers:
- General Laura J. Richardson, Commander, U.S. Southern Command
- Susan Segal, President & CEO, AS/COA
“For this hemisphere, it is an honor to be able to use a lot of soft power initiatives,” said General Laura J. Richardson to Susan Segal during the 2023 COA Symposium and 28th BRAVO Business Awards. In a panel entitled "Advancing Hemispheric Prosperity & Security," Richardson spoke about the U.S. military's focus on, among other things, providing humanitarian assistance and disaster response to Latin America.
General Richardson and Segal also spoke about China's Belt and Road Initiative. The commander noted her concern for China’s increasing investment in Latin America’s infrastructure. "If you are there to invest, great. If you're there to be part of team democracy, great. But if you're not, then what are you there to do?" said Richardson.
On cybersecurity, General Richardson highlighted the importance of strengthening networks and raising technology understanding among leaders in the region. She noted that solutions have to be relevant. “Team USA can always help, but we have to be asked by partner nations,” Richardson concluded.
