Farnsworth explains that the populist trend might be shifting, with the potential for more pragmatic leaders. Visits by U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to Latin America, as well as upcoming visits from Latin American leaders to the United States, are a sign of growing ties. “There is a sense of outreach but it needs more than visits: it needs concrete actions, and we’ll have to look at that down the road to see if those actually materialize,” said Farnsworth.
