If the cost of exporting to the United States goes up, countries may shift to trading with China, explained the AS/COA vice president on the radio program.
Reporter Tibisay Zea interviewed AS/COA's vice president Eric Farnsworth on The World radio news program about China's inauguration of a commercial port in Chancay, Peru.
Zea explained that two decades ago, Latin America used to look to the United States almost exclusively for trade opportunities. Farnsworth explained what has changed.
"Latin America needs infrastructure. They need financing for it and China shows up and they say, 'We have money and we're not going to make a lot of demands or put a lot of conditionality on our project and so let's do business together,'" said Farnsworth.
"If you're a country like Peru and you're exporting your products to the United States, if those now become more expensive, by definition, you're going to be sending less to the United States. You could actually predict that some in the region would find it even more convenient to go toward China," said Farnsworth.
