For Media: AS/COA and USMF to Hold Briefing on North American Leaders' Summit
Ahead of President Biden's trip to Mexico, experts will hold a January 6 briefing on affecting trilateral ties, such as trade and immigration.
January 4, 2023—Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden head to Mexico to meet with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on January 9 and 10 for the North America Leaders’ Summit (NALS). The Summit comes at a critical time, with pandemic recovery and recession concerns weighing on the global economy.
With that in mind, experts from Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA) and the U.S.-Mexico Foundation (USMF) will hold a virtual press briefing on Friday, January 6 to share insights and fact sheets on topics of major importance to North American relations.
The region accounts for a tenth of the world’s population but a third of global GDP. Just a month after Mexico and the United States celebrate 200 years of formal bilateral ties, NALS offers the three heads of state an opportunity to advance competitiveness, nearshoring, and supply chain resiliency. But trade disputes over corn and energy, fentanyl trafficking, and challenges related to rising migration will also be key topics to tackle in the trilateral relationship.
Prior to the press briefing, AS/COA and USMF will release a media brief with fact sheets on major issues affecting North American relations, including trade, migration, and security and authored by Editor-in-Chief of AS/COA Online Carin Zissis; Research and Policy Manager at the U.S.-Mexico Foundation Pedro Casas Alatriste; and Research and Public Policy Deputy Manager at the U.S.-Mexico Foundation, Axel Cabrera.
Join us on January 6 at 10am ET for a virtual press briefing to be held on Zoom. The following speakers will answer questions related to North American relations and the NALS summit.
Speakers:
- Enrique Perret, Managing Director, U.S.-Mexico Foundation
- Carin Zissis, Editor-in-Chief, AS/COA Online
- Eric Farnsworth, Vice President, Americas Society/Council of the Americas
- Louise Blais, Senior Special Advisor, Business Council of Canada
