“I think it is going to be much easier to produce and use green hydrogen in Latin America than, for example, in Europe,” said Andres Gluski during the 2023 COA Symposium and 28th BRAVO Business Awards. In a panel entitled "Perspectives from the Private Sector to Lower Carbon Emissions," private-sector leaders spoke about Latin America’s transition to clean energy.
Leaders discussed the importance of sustainability rather than only focusing on potential profit when it comes to evaluating projects. Francisco Ruiz-Tagle of CMPC noted that his strategy involves seeing how a project fits the company’s larger sustainability goals. One challenge facing the private sector is a lack of cohesion in the industry’s approach to sustainability, noted Alvaro Cardenas of Diageo, noting the importance of collaboration between the private and public sectors. “Regulations globally are more linked to disclosure and transparency, but not that much into incentives,” said Cardenas.
Speakers also mentioned reasons to be optimistic about Latin America’s reduction in carbon emissions. Carlos Barrera of Atlas Renewable Energy noted three drivers: the cost-competitiveness of renewable energy, consolidated corporate demand for clean energy, and emerging technology.
